The Spanish Republic is done for, this is the main talk in the diplomatic world. The conservative British government is happy about it. Chamberlains support for the Fascists in Europe, especially for Hitler and Franco, is fruitful. Chamberlain want strong totalitarian states to oppose communism, therefore he thinks that a strong Germany can keep the Soviets aback, not caring about hundred of thousands citizens in those countries suffering under police brutality, the loss of their civil rights and even their life. And for Franco he has personal sympathies, the Spanish general himself is more conservative than a Fascist, using the Spanish Fascist movement mainly cause he needs a ideology against the widespread leftism in the Spanish population in the 30's. Also Fascism was since the 1920's what seemed to be a reliable partner for Nationalists, militarists and the right winged upper and middle class against the constant thread of socialism, communism, and in Spain also anarchism. Anthony Eden, British minister for foreign affairs, is convinced that this diplomatic course is wrong and that the democratic nations cannot tolerate or support any totalitarian system, rightist or leftist. He alone is standing against the rest of Chamberlains cabinet. Many countries establish now open relationships with Franco's administration in Burgos, sending emissaries and diplomats. Britain establishes an agreement with Burgos, from which it is only a small step to recognition. Japan recognizes Franco after the Fascist conquer of northern Spain. Germany and Italy recognized the Franco administration already in November 1936, when it looked like the fall of Madrid was only a matter of hours. |
