- January 1937 - 

The losses on men and material for the battle of Madrid have been enormous, for both sides. The Fascist Army around Madrid is practically at the end, if the Republican forces could attack them now, the war would be over. But the Republic is not in the condition to launch a massive counter attack out of Madrid.

Franco can convince Hitler to support him even more. Hitler will send in between weeks new men, air planes, tanks and artillery. In a few months Franco will be stronger than ever, while the Republic still struggles to obtain what it needs to survive - weapons. Only Russia is selling weapons to Spain, and those weapons have a long way to come...

Madrid is suffering air rades several times a day, and sometimes by night.

06 Dec *Fascists take Boadilla
  The Internationals were defending the city, one of the few survivors of the Internationals is Romilly, nephew of Winston Churchill. While Churchill has open sympathies for Franco (like most of his friends in the ruling British conservative party), his nephew, only 17 years old, came to Spain to volunteer in the International Brigades.
11 Jan *The Fascist offensive in the northwestern of Madrid is stopped
  Both sides starts to build trenches and dig themselves in after heavy casualties, in temporary exhaustion.

19 Jan *Republican General Lister gain back the "cerro de los Angeles" next to Madrid
  General Lister of the International Brigades gain back the "cerro de los Angeles" next to Madrid. These Hill was overlooking the city, the Fascists had heavy artillery here, from which they were shelling the city. The International Brigades become more and more the key units in the Republican Army.
