02 Nov *The first Russian Airplanes over Madrid
Today the Fascist bombers got their first surprise meeting the enemy unexpectedly in the air. The Republican aviation had till now only a handful of obsolete machines, but today the people of Madrid can see the first Russian "Chatos" defending the city. The citizens are standing in the streets and watching the sky, ignoring the alarms and the calls for shelter. Several attacking airplanes were shot down, even though some Russian airplanes got also shot down by Italian Fiats, guarding the bombers. One Russian pilot suffers a horrible death: After his machine is destroyed by a Italian Fiat he saves himself with a jump out of his burning plane, his parachute brings him save to the city, but he is lynched by a mob of furious citizens, they think he is a German Fascist from the Legion Condor.

04 Nov *Four Anarchist ministers join the Republican government
The new ministers are: Frederica Montseny, Juan Garcia Oliver, Juan Lopez and Joan Peiro. Llargo Caballero can unite with those ministers Spain's by far largest mass movement with the government.
04 Nov *The Fascists take the suburb Getafe
After a heavy attack with Moorish cavalry, tanks and airplanes the defenders are completely defeated, wounded are walking without orientation over the battle field, the organization of the defense in this point breaks down.
Fascist General Varela tells foreign journalists in a press conference:"You can tell the world, Madrid will fall within one week.
General Mola plans the attack route: over the "Casa de Campo" and the practically unpopulated university quarter to avoid heavy losses in a fierce street fight if he had to enter through the south suburbs, traditionally strong populated districts of the working class.
05 Nov *The Republican airforce can force today for the first time the attacking bomber airplanes and their escort to break up the attack on Madrid before they even reach the city.
06 Nov *Yague occupies the suburb "Carabanchel" and the strategical important hill "cerro de los Angeles". With that the Fascists are standing on the door to Madrid.
Francos staff is writing already the list of people to get executed when the city is under Fascist control. The attack is planned for the next day.
06 Nov *Government moves to Valencia in the south of Spain
Expecting the fall of Madrid, the government moves to Valencia, General Miaja is named commanding officer of the Madrid defense front. Undoubtly the government wished upon him the surrendering of the city. Thousands of citizens flee out of the city over the only open street, in the east of Madrid. The city is close to a panic.

The "wonder" of Madrid

The Republican Generals, General Miaja and General Asensio, Under-Secretary of War, open at 7p.m., after the government had already left the city, two envelopes adressed to them from the government with scaled orders. The envelopes are not to be open till dawn of the next day, but they decide to read them immediately, whereupon they discover that each had been handed the other's assignment.

General Jose Miaja,
Commander of the Madrid Army

At an all-night meeting in his office, Miaja organize what everybody considered then to be a suicidal stand. Lieutenant Colonel Vicente Rojo and Major Matallana Gomez organize over night the communications, the supplies and the chain of commands for the defense. General Miaja tells the several dozens assembled officers that most of them will probably die, and the officers later report the same to their troops. The sole general order was to resist all along the front, and not to retreat one inch. In a matter of hours General Miaja changes the psychological situation completely. Before the defenders were without spirit, left alone by the government and without any reasonable hope to withstand the attack, now they are filled with the grim will to resist. Citizens of all kinds, even children, are lining up on the front to support the militias and soldiers. First they bring water, food and blankets, but later, when the attack starts, many of them will stay in the fire, waiting that a militiamen or soldier dies, jump into the trenches, taking the soldiers weapon and place, and starting to fight.
The military backbone of this last resistance was the Communist party and the "fifth regiment" (qiunto regimento), the communist militia, well trained and highly motivated.
To the left: General Miaja (sitting before the standing man) forms immediately a "Junta of Defense" with the progressive forces in the city.

07 Nov *The attack on Madrid, Fascists gain important bridges on the way to the inner city

08 Nov *All-out assault on Madrid, the "International Brigades" arrive

The defenders are running out of ammunition, on several points the front is close to break, in the university quarter the enemy pushes through the Republican lines. This is the moment when the first "Internationals" arrive in Madrid. The shocked citizens think in the first moment that the Fascist are in the inner city when they see 3000 uniformed and disciplined soldiers marching in. The members, mostly German, Polnish and Italian veterans of WW-I and German concentration camps, start to sing revolutionary songs and the "International". The citizens rush out of their houses and sing and shout for joy. The "Brigadistas" march immediately to the front, and throw themselves unflinchingly into battle. (2000 of them die or get wounded in between 48 hours)

In the War Ministry of Madrid telegramms are arriving congratulating General Franco on his victorious entry. But till now only Republican officers are reading them...

When the Moroccan mercenaries of Franco break through the Republican lines in direction of the Model Prison, General Miaja himself drive to the threatened sector, take his pistol in one hand and shout at the retreating soldiers:"Cowards! Die in your trenches. Die with your General." This encourage his men, the gap can be closed. All over the city citizens, women like the men, are reinforcing the trenches, taking the rifles from dead or wounded soldiers.

08 Nov *Massacre in Paracuellos del Jarama
Around 1000 mostly political prisoners were massacred by their Republican Militia guards today in Paracuellos del Jarama. The prisoners, most of them accused Fascists, were to be evacuated from Madrid to prevent their liberation by Fascist troops. Their Guards decide to join the defense of Madrid, killed all of the prisoners and returned to Madrid.

Everybody is expecting that the fall of Madrid is a question of hours, Franco is throwing everything he has into the battle, the German airplanes are fighting over Madrid and both countrys await from this diplomatical step to strengten the position of Franco and weaken the stand and the moral of the Republic.
The Durruti Column is fighting in the University City without rest since the 15th, from the 3.000 men only 400 survived till now and they are completely exhausted. Durruti will launch an attack at the University hospital the next day.

19 Nov *Buenaventura Durruti mortally wounded

The Durruti Column launched their attack on the University hospital, held by the Fascists. Around 2p.m. Durruti was hit by a bullet on the right side of his breast. It is suspected, that this bullet was shot by accident or by purpose by one of his men. (Till today, October 2000, this is not cleared. Cause the bullet passed through his chest and lounge, stories rose up about that the bullet hit him from behind and was shot by one of his men to stop the self murderous attack on the University hospital. This is not cleared out, and never will be, but in the heavy and fierce street fighting during this attack Durruti could have very well been hit by a enemies bullet from the back as from front.)

20 Nov *Buenaventura Durruti dies at 6a.m.

20 Nov *Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera executed in Alicante

Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, leader of the Fascist organization "Falange", is executed in the prison of Alicante after a public trial, where he was condemned to death. The execution is carried out by the new Communist civil governor of Alicante without awaiting the confirmation of sentence by the government.
(This break of the law and insubordination angered Llargo Caballero, but the Republic was already depending on the Soviet supply and the Spanish Communist Party. This Party start to act as a state in the state).

23 Nov *Franco suspend the attack on Madrid
After 2 weeks Franco has to give up his plans of taking the city. He is preparing now himself and his allies for a long and expensive war.
